He also demonstrates various "rasgueos" executed with and without the thumb and presents the "tango" and "soleas" rhythms. Juan Martin: El Arte Flamenco De La Guitarra

By Juan Martin. Instructional book and CD for guitar. 88 pages.

The Method has been designed for the player of any standard. You may be an absolute beginner with no previous knowledge of music or the guitar, or you may already play the guitar quite well. Your ambitions may be just to be able to enjoy yourself playing Flamenco, or they may reach much further, perhaps even so far as pursuing a professional career with the guitar. Whatever the case, the Method will provide the basis for you to advance greatly your skill and understanding, so that you find in the joys and sorrows of Flamenco something more of that capacity for expressing oneself through the guitar whcih Juan Martin so excitingly demonstrates.

An excellent method that works
"This is one of the few methods that really works. You can learn these Flamenco techniques because the method is very carefully edited and well-matched to instruction photos.

It helps to have a classical guitar background, but that isn't really necessary since the Flamenco techniques are really different and you can learn those directly if that is your interest.

An excellent and well thought out series!"
-- Paul L. from Boston area, May 22, 2007

Solid Flamenco
"If you want to learn Flamenco, this is the book to start with. It assumes no knowledge of the art prior to starting. The text is very comprehensive and will teach you a lot of important background knowledge. You will soon figure out the absolute importance of the compas and strictly adhering to it.

The included CD is indispensable, because you will learn just as much by listening as by reading the music. Although it claims you can start without any guitar experience, this would be very tough. After you have gone through this book, you will have a solid basis on which you can build. The music is not too elaborate and concentrates on providing a pure flamenco basis. You can then expand on this foundation by learning more advanced falsettas.

Please note that the book is in two parts. Volume II is purchased separately I. You will need both volumes. This is the reason that I won't give it five stars. It is basically one book that for some strange reason is cut in two.

The text describes the history and development of flamenco music; teaches basic music theory; presents developmental studies on flamenco guitar techniques such as rasgueado and tremolo; and offers 14 exciting flamenco guitar solos. Written in notation and tablature.

Best Flamenco technique book
"This is probably the best basic flamenco technique book for those who want to learn how to play flamenco guitar. If offers excellent instruction that help build foundation in techniques such as rasgueados, tremolos and etc. Serrano's rasgeado technique is probably one of the hardest to master, however with great effort and lots of practice, you will discover your fingers can move faster than you ever realize."
-- Leng Widjaja from Fresno, CA, September 30, 2005
Nice Book
" This is a good flamenco book. Nice excercises, that include scale practices, rasguedo technique, pulgar(thumb) techniques, among others. It is a good introduction to the Flamenco style, as it introduces some of the major forms of flamenco such as rumba, bulerias, sevillianas etc. It also has a cool take on the classic, Romanza, by infusing it with the Rumba style. Review of Juan Martin's flamenco lessons

Play Solo Flamenco Guitar with Juan Martin (Book, CD, and DVD)

Written by Juan Martin. Instructional book (spiral bound), instructional video: DVD and examples CD for guitar. Beginning-Intermediate. With introductory text, standard guitar notation, guitar tablature and black & white photos. Text language English and Spanish.
Designed as a comprehensive multimedia teaching set, this book, CD, and DVD present 42 solos, progressively graded in 6 levels from absolute beginners to more advanced, to suit players of all levels. It contains examples of eighteen different palos (rhythmic forms) of flamenco, with a wealth of melodic falsetas and rhythms. The music for all these is accurately written in notation and flamenco tab (cifra) in the book, and is also recorded on the companion CD. The DVD video contains over 57 minutes of solo music, and also includes introduction by Juan Martin and brief scenes of Andalucia today, which help to place this profoundly exciting and deeply felt music in the landscape of its origins. Juan Martin has succeeded here in showing how even music which is simple and very easy to start with can express the essential sound and emotion of flamenco, to build step by step the skills necessary for the performance of concert solos.

Best method I have experienced
"After 20 or 30 'Learn to play Flamenco' methods, none of which were successful, it is great to have a method that really works."
-- William Chapman from Stockton, CA, July 11, 2007

Authentic & Intelligible, encouraging
"Juan Martin has true Spanish flamenco articulation and rhythm, and exposes it here. The dual note/cifra transcription is accurate too, taken with his gentle admonition in the DVD to always play with artistry: Flamenco uses rubatos, ad libitums, and echo/emphasis dynamics. Marvelous combination especially if you [want to] read music well. Good follow-up to --and consistent with-- easier series _Flamenco Guitar Method_ by Fred Nance and Mary Ann Godla (GWM General Words & Music Co., Neil A. Kjos Jr., Publishers, Park Ridge, IL 1973). Most pieces are traditional authentic technique (including nuances like changing plucking finger); some few are "new flamenco" with South American stylistics and rhythms. Se aprende, por medio del castellano natural que se presenta al lado de ingle's, todo te'rmino de descripcio'n de toque. !!Fiable -- el tocaor maestro quiere que se aprenda. Le agradecemos.
